Our Technology

The next generation of electric vehicle chargers

Early in the industry’s development, Petalite foresaw the issues with first generation EV charging products, which use legacy AC-DC conversion technology unsuitable for DC fast charging.

Petalite was created to overcome the industry’s problems through R&D and innovation. Following this vision, Petalite has created a new charging technology called SDC which is revolutionary for DC fast charging and forms the foundation of its upcoming commercial launch.

SDC Technology Explained

Following many years of R&D and 7 UK Government innovation grants, Petalite has created a new AC-DC conversion technology from first principles called SDC, which is patented across all major jurisdictions.

SDC technology combines the power factor front end of AC with the DCDC conversion stage simplifying the implementation. Using Silicon Carbide (SiC) MOSFET technology and a proprietary high power high frequency (HPHF) transformer, inhouse designed, each of the three phases are combined to create a DC output with reduced ripple.

The benefits of SDC technology

Leveraging the unique inherent benefits of SDC , Petalite has designed a ground up solution to fulfil the needs of the EV charging markets for today and for the future. The whole design of SDC technology has been done inhouse by Petalite’s team of multi-disciplined engineers. Employing best practice from Aerospace and Automotive to ensure the SDC is designed to fulfil worldwide market certification requirements; UKCA, CE and UL. Safety, reliability, and availability are critical requirements for the solution as Petalite feels EV chargers need to be considered as critical infrastructure rather than consumer electronics.

SDC adopts a different approach to resolve the limitations of unreliability and availability found in existing EV charging solutions. This approach allows SDC to be parallelled in 10kW, 20kW and 40kW to provide scalable solutions for both rapid and fast EV Chargers. The technology allows us to parallel power supplies theoretically infinitely. Our power supplies are significantly lower power than those typically found on the market (25-50 kW). In turn, this allows us to create a power supply with a much simpler design, using more robust components for greater lifetime and reliability.

With hundreds of these smaller power supplies within a charging station, Petalite has the potential for a system with dramatically improved availability, reliability and power scalability.
